Extra deputies help deter underage drinking on Masonboro Island

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Every year hundreds of people find a way out to Masonboro Island to party for the Fourth of July. A large number of people drinking plus a remote location equals a challenge for law enforcement and emergency services.

We were with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and EMS when they prepared for the influx of people to Masonboro Island. There were more deputies patrolling the island this year.

Lieutenant Jerry Brewer says the added law enforcement presence helped deter some of the underage drinking.

“I would say that this year was as busy as any other year but with the added officers we had out there we were able to help curb some of the underage drinking,” said Brewer.

Even with more officers on the beach there were still some incidences. There were 64 calls for medical help. Eight people were taken by boat off the island for medical assistance. Twenty three people were taken off the island for receiving underage drinking citations. And there were three arrests: one for disorderly conduct, one for driving a boat intoxicated and another for assault on a female.

No one though had to be air lifted from the island Fourth of July weekend and there were no major incidences.
