Fair Bluff still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The town of Fair Bluff is continuing to pick up the pieces following Hurricane Matthew.
Some residents were allowed to see what is left of their homes Monday afternoon, but a lot of work needs to be done before they can live there again.
Officials say the water is steadily going down and while that may be a good sign, the town still has a lot of cleaning up to do. Several roads throughout the area are still closed including Main Street, Riverside Street, Academy Street, Goodman Street and Orange Street.
When talking about the recent devastation, Fair Bluff’s Mayor, Billy Hammond got quite emotional.
“It’s been stressful, long, hard. Taking it one day at a time,” Hammond said.
Mayor Hammond says he is not giving up and is determined to get the town back up and running the way it was before the storm. He says it may take several months even years to get everything cleaned up, but for now they’re just trying to get people home safely.
