Family of motorcyclist killing in accident speaks out after sentencing
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 2 years after a young man was killed riding his motorcycle, the driver who caused the deadly crash has entered a plea agreement.
In May 2022, Andrew Kester Jr turned left onto Gingerwood Drive, directly in front of motorcyclist Kyle Houck.
Houck was unable to avoid the collision and struck Kester’s car.
The 22-year-old Houck remained in a coma for 16 days before he died.
In court Monday, Kester pleaded guilty to two charges, misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield.
Kester received 12 months probation, a 75-day suspended jail sentence, license suspension, and a $1,000 fine.
The victim’s father, Ashley Houck, said it’s difficult knowing the sentencing didn’t involve any active jail time.
“It kind of feels like a big kick in the gut but at the same time, I do know that this is 100% an accident, you know,” Houck said. “Doesn’t make it any easier, but you know, it does help bring some closure and you know, especially knowing that something’s gotten done, we did get something for our son.”
Ashley said the family continues to honor Kyle’s memory.
“You know, every year we host a little birthday celebration for Kyle where all the friends and family gather around, you know. Some of them are still on motorcycles and what not. We have a good time. We try to always keep his memory and honor him. He was also an organ donor so there’s quite a few people alive because of him.”
Houck added that he met with District Attorney Jason Smith on Monday and appreciated hearing the DA explain that these specific charges did not include jail time.
