Family of Shallotte man killed in crash seek answers
SHALOTTE, NC (WWAY) – A Shallotte family looking for answers after their loved one was killed in a pursuit involving law enforcement that ended in a crash in Brunswick County.
Becky Lasalle is the mother of the man who was killed in the rollover accident.
“I really don’t know much, all I know is my child is gone, he’s dead and my heart is broken,” said LaSalle.
According to LaSalle and her son Bryan Goodwin, they’re left with more questions than answers after a deadly crash in Brunswick County.
“They aren’t giving me no details, I don’t know what happened, all they said was that he got killed in a car accident,” she said. “My heart is aching.”
“I’m trying to figure it out, I want answers, and mom deserves answers, and so do my brothers and sisters,” said Goodwin.
The crash happened Friday 7:30 p.m. on Holden Beach Road in Brunswick County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a vehicle being driven by Tyrance Drequan Benbow who is also known as “Duke”, was being pursued by Brunswick County Sheriff’s Deputies.
State Highway Patrol said, Benbow lost control of the vehicle, hit a deputy’s cruiser, then crashed into an oncoming vehicle head-on, which caused both cars to flip.
Benbow was pronounced dead at the scene, in the other car, two adults and three children who were taken to the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, according to NCHP.
Benbow’s mother says she is getting few answers when it comes to her son’s death, and doesn’t understand why an autopsy is being done, especially since she didn’t request one.
“Why are they doing an autopsy on my child, and I don’t want that,” she said. “I want to see him, I don’t know if he’s dead, I don’t know nothing.”
The family is heartbroken over the death their family member, and said he was well like in the community he lived in.
“He was the type of guy that always had a smile on his face, because “Duke” was a community man,” said Goodwin.
“He treated everybody nice, he was just a sweet child,” said LaSalle.
We reached to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office who stated more information related to the initial cause of the pursuit will be shared at later date.
According to the NC State Highway Patrol more details will be released once they’ve completed their investigation.
