Fast and the Furriest: Dogs compete in Battleship Splash Event

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Over the weekend, pups from near and far gathered for a competition at the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship in Wilmington, as the Carolina Dock Dogs hosted their Battleship Splash event.

This free, public event showcased a variety of exciting dog sports, including the Speed Retrieve, where dogs raced to retrieve a baton at the end of the pool.

After a twelve-year hiatus due to the pandemic and weather challenges, the Battleship Splash made a triumphant return.

Timothy Lake, President of Carolina Dock Dogs, expressed the community’s enthusiasm for the event’s comeback.

“We have some competitors returning from the original Battleship Splash. Their first event was held here 12 years ago, and they are retiring their dogs at this event, making it a full-circle moment for the more experienced participants. We also have many first-timers, and everyone is thrilled. We’re already planning to return next year.”

The event drew a diverse group of competitors, with local dogs joining those who traveled from other states.

Competitions included Big Air, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve.

To ensure a fair competition, dogs were divided into divisions based on weight and length, so every dog had a chance to shine.

The Battleship Splash provided an opportunity for dog lovers to enjoy a day of high-energy fun and celebrate their furry friends’ talents.
