Fawn season upon us, what to do if you stumble upon one

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Oh, deer! It’s fawn season which means you may see more of these baby deer firsthand. But wildlife experts said there are a number of do’s and don’ts if you happen to come across one.

Madge Matteo is a Licensed North Carolina Rehabber in Brunswick County who focuses on fawn. She said May and June are prime months to see more baby deer wandering outside of the wilderness.

Matteo said it’s best to not approach them because they are wild animals. Once handled by humans, it’s hard to get the fawn’s mother to retrieve her little one.

“We have a lot of wonderful people in our community, and they go the extra yard to try and help assist. But I’m going to give you fawn 101, leave the fawn where it’s at. If a fawn is laying on its side or has its legs stretched out, then the fawn is in need,” Matteo said.

Matteo said if you do happen to cross paths with a fawn and fear it may be in need, contact your nearest Wildlife Rehabber and let them handle it.
