FEMA discusses Brunswick Nuclear Plant emergency drill

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Federal regulators say an emergency drill at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant this week went well.

It is a bi-annual test involving Brunswick and New Hanover counties, the state, and other emergency response personnel.

FEMA Senior Specialist J.T. Ackerman says all agencies demonstrated operational coordination, situational assessment, public information warning, and environmental response health and safety.

After the news conference, Brunswick Nuclear Plant site vice president Randy Gideon addressed a false alarm that happened in May.

“The issue was isolated to a man-machine interface on the siren that is not actually necessary for the siren to function appropriately. And that function has been disabled on all our sirens, so there is no potential for that to cause further issue with the sirens,” said Gideon.

Gideon says if a siren does sound, tune into local news to find out if it is real, and to hear further instructions.
