Female meteorologists wear ‘the dress’ to raise awareness for STEM

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Do you remember a few months ago when one dress was a huge hit with female broadcast meteorologists across the country? Today, they all wore that dress for a good reason.

These meteorologists have teamed up and are all wearing that dress on National Pi Day, March 14, in order to raise awareness for women in STEM fields.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math, which of course includes meteorology.

The group of meteorologists, including our own Helen Holt, hopes to encourage other girls and young women to pursue careers in STEM fields.

According U.S. Department of Commerce, in 2009 women comprised 48 percent of the workforce but just 24 percent of STEM jobs.

Did you know 74 percent of high school girls are interested in STEM fields, but they only account for 20 percent of college degrees in those fields.
