Filing opens for June US House primary
RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Filing opened today for candidates who want to run in the June primary for US House of Representatives.
The State Board of Election says the filing period began today at noon. It will close Friday, March 25 at noon.

The new lines, if upheld by the federal court, would put all of southeastern North Carolina into the 7th District, except for part of Bladen County, which will now be in the 2nd District. For the last two congressional elections, parts of New Hanover and Pender counties were in the 3rd District, but that would no longer be the case.
Before the changes, Rep. David Rouzer had filed to run for a second term representing District 7. He was to face a primary challenge from Republican Mark Otto. Both men are from Johnston County, but the district’s new boundary passes between their homes, which are just miles apart, putting Otto outside the district. Residency in a district is not a requirement to run.
State legislators also permitted candidates in other contests to run for US House during the June Primary. A successful primary candidate will have to pick between contests by June 14. Rep. Susi Hamilton, a Democrat who represents State House District 18, which runs from Wilmington across northern Brunswick County, said she would considering running for Congress. Democrat J. Wesley Casteen filed to run during the original filing period in December.
The NC Board of Elections says voter rolls are currently open across the state, allowing new voters to register and current voters to change party or other registration information. Unaffiliated voters who selected a partisan ballot in the March Primary are permitted to select a different party in June.
Results in all 2016 primaries are determined by a plurality where the winner takes all. There are no runoffs.
Filing is also now open for November’s NC Supreme Court election.
