Final days of Glen Apartment evacuation draw closer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — About a week ago, some tenants were evicted from the Glen Apartments because of hurricane damage. Now, all residents have been forced to vacate with just ten days of notice.

All residents are required to be out by Monday.

But, many are still uncertain of where they will live as they await answers from FEMA and insurance companies. Some say the wait is taking too long and they will have to move away from Wilmington because housing options are limited.

“There’s not a lot the community managers are really doing in this situation,” said resident Donnell Dumes. “I know that they’re stressed with a lot of different things and they’re up to their eyeballs with a lot of different things and there’s just not that much help going on anywhere, and it’s like survival of the fittest with everyone feening for themselves at this point.”

The biggest question multiple residents stressed was: Where are the elderly with limited mobility going to go?

“There are going to be a lot of homeless people on the streets of Wilmington,” says Dumes.

In a statement by the Phillips Management Group, the company states:

“While it is our intention to rebuild The Glen community, our focus now is on protecting the health and safety of our residents. Because of microbial growth and other unsafe conditions, we have informed all residents that The Glen will close on October 8.”
