Financial assistance program for select New Hanover County schools opens to applicants

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A financial assistance program for the families of New Hanover County students is now open.

The program titled School Zones of Hope is led by New H.O.P.E. CDC. The program provides financial assistance to the families of low-income students.

To qualify for assistance, students must attend one of seven schools identified as Impact Zone Schools in New Hanover County.

Eligible schools include:

  • Virgo Preparatory Academy
  • Freeman Elementary
  • Snipes Elementary
  • Gregory Elementary
  • Williston Middle
  • Forest Hills Elementary
  • New Hanover High

The assistance can be used to cover anything that will help the student succeed, from paying to fix the family car to helping pay bills.

Doug Wahl with New H.O.P.E. CDC noted even a small amount of assistance can go a long way for families.

“This is where it starts, at places like Williston and other schools, this is where dreams are starting. If you can say to a middle school student who may be 12, 13, 14-years-old we’re investing in your dreams, I think that propels them a little bit further,” he said.

Wahl said assistance is only given will funds last, so he recommends parents act now. Parents can view eligibility requirements and apply here.
