Fingerprints lead to robbery arrest and conviction

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Jamarcus Damon sentenced to 40-60 months in prison for two counts of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Stolen Firearm in New Hanover County Superior Court.

On July 23, 2014, the victims of the robbery were using a CashPoints ATM at the Food Lion parking lot on North College Road. Damon, age 20, and an unidentified person approached them and demanded that they withdraw $60 each. They also, after producing a silver handgun, demanded their cell phones.

The victims immediately contacted the Wilmington Police Department to report the robbery. WPD detectives responded to the scene and identified a print on the hood. At the time law enforcement was unable to match the print to any known suspects in their database, and the victims could not identify the perpetrators.

On December 16, 2015, the Wilmington Police Department served a narcotics search warrant on 417 Clay Street. There were several people present, including Damon, though he was not the subject of the search warrant. The police searched Damon’s bedroom and found a 9 mm Smith and Wesson which had previously been stolen. Damon and William Murphy were in the bedroom at the time. Dmarcus Hooper was found to be in possession of more than 12 grams of heroin during the search of the residence and Titus Damon, a validated gang member, was found in possession of 150 bags of heroin and $5,000. Jamarcus Damon was fingerprinted after being arrested for possession of a stolen handgun. His print matched that from the hood of the victim’s car in the 2014 CashPoints robbery.

Damon was interviewed by WPD about the robbery where he admitted to taking part in the robbery. “This case highlights a perfect marriage of technology and persistent police work in order to solving a violent crime.” commented Assistant District Attorney Timothy Severo.
