Fire crews battle metal scrap yard fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fire crews worked to put out a fire that sparked the middle of a large pile of metal scraps.

The incident was at the Southern Metals Recycling Inc. on US 421 in New Hanover County around 4 p.m.

According to New Hanover County Fire Battalion Chief Mike Sophel, they finally put out the fire around 8:30 Friday evening. About 130,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the blaze.

There were no injuries reported in the fire inside a 40-foot pile of scrap.

No word on what started the blaze.
