Fire Rescue urges safe burning practices after multiple brush fires

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s been a busy week for New Hanover County Fire Rescue, which has responded to at least three brush fires caused by open burning practices.

New Hanover County Fire Rescue is also reminding residents of the dangers associated with open burning. Caress Clegg, a spokesperson for NHCFR, emphasizes that open burning is the leading cause of wildfires in the area.

“Open burning is the number one cause of wildfires in our area, so we want to be mindful and proactive,” Clegg said.

In North Carolina, many people use open burning as a way to dispose of leaves, plants, and other vegetative materials. However, burning trash, cans, or lumber is prohibited by law.

Clegg also stresses the importance of having a water source nearby when burning outdoors.

“Make sure you have a water source, a hose, or garden tools to quickly put out any flames if they get out of hand,” she added.

Clegg also pointed out that weather conditions play a critical role in fire safety.

“Yesterday was quite windy, and we saw at least two fires get out of control. We need to make sure it’s not too dry and that the wind isn’t picking up,” she explained.

And in Bladen County Fire Marshal Kenneth Clark reports that his team has responded to seven fires since lunchtime, all of which were sparked by open burning.

“Right now, we’re on a call with three structures and a vehicle involved because someone was burning in a barrel,” Clark said.

Due to recent windy conditions, Bladen County Emergency Management is urging residents to delay outdoor burning to prevent fires from spreading uncontrollably.

In North Carolina, residents are required to obtain a permit before burning.

To apply for a burn permit, visit the North Carolina Forestry’s website.
