Firefighters contain apartment fire, no one hurt
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington firefighters responded to a blaze on the third floor of an apartment complex Thursday afternoon.
A spokesperson with the fire department said the calls came in around 1 p.m. for a fire at the Cape Cottages on Litchfield Way off of Martin Luther King Boulevard.
While they said they were able to contain the fire to one unit rather quickly, firefighters said it took awhile to put out the fire completely.
As attack lines were being pulled into place, firefighters did primary and secondary searches. During these searches, they rescued a dog from the building.
They said the fire was confined to the apartment of origin, but there was extensive water damage to the second and first story apartments directly under the fire area. Damage estimates to the structure and contents is $15o,ooo.
Wilmington Fire Investigators have ruled the fire as accidental. The fire started on a couch, on the third floor balcony, with improperly discarded smoking material being the cause. There were no reported injuries to emergency personnel or civilians.
