Firefighters kayak 200 miles in memory of WFD brother

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A group of area firefighters recently kayaked nearly 200 miles in honor of one of their brothers they lost earlier this year.

The trip was in memory of Wilmington Fire Department firefighter Dane Waggett.

The organization is called Paddling for Pennies and their goal is to raise awareness, funds, and respect for fallen and wounded heroes.

This trip spanned from Raleigh to New Bern in the Neuse River, 193 miles, over a four day stretch. It started last Thursday and ended Sunday.

Paddling for Pennies ask supporters to donate $1.93, one penny per mile, to help spread the story of the ones they paddle for.
