Firefighters read to children
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Are you looking for something to do this summer to beat the heat? Firefighters are teaming up with the New Hanover County Public Library for educational events.
Members of the Wilmington Fire Department came to the Main Library in downtown Wilmington on Wednesday to read to children.
They also shared fire safety tips and answered questions about their gear and what it’s like to be a firefighter.
This is the second summer the Wilmington Fire Department has partnered with the libraries to put on these events.
“At each of the branches we’ll read a story,” said Wendy Giannini, the Community Risk Reduction Coordinator for the Wilmington Fire Department. “We’ll introduce the children to a real life firefighter and have the firefighters dress from their station uniforms to their turn out gear for firefighter familiarization.”
Giannini added that teaching children what a firefighter looks like dressed up in their gear, and to not be afraid of them, could save a life one day.
