First Connect NC bond project completed in Cape Fear Region

FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — It is a big step, and only the beginning for state park facilities. The first Connect NC bond project, which is designed to improve state parks, is finished and it happened to be in the Cape Fear area.

Friday afternoon a ceremony was held to reveal the improvements made to the restroom and picnic facilities at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area visitor center.

The men and women’s bathroom by the beach have been completely redone. There are new shaded picnic areas as well. It is a project that cost $488,000, money that comes from the Connect NC bond approved by voters last year.

Secretary of the NC department of natural and cultural resources, Susi Hamilton says she could not be more excited the first ribbon cutting was in her hometown.

“Well it’s a coincidence. Believe it or not this work started prior to me being hired to the position. But it sure does feel good to come home and celebrate our first ribbon cutting for the bond referendum right here in my home town. So I’m particularly excited for that reason,” Hamilton said.

With the Connect NC bond project $75M is being distributed to more than 40 parks across the state, all to make improvements to their facilities through 2019.
