First day of school interrupted by gas leak
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A spokeswoman for New Hanover County Schools said kids are back in class following a brief evacuation due to a gas leak.
She said it happened at Holly Tree Elementary School this morning before lunch time. She said children were evacuated from the building for about 30 minutes. Officials believe a gas line going into the cafeteria’s hot water heater caused the leak. They said staff smelled an odor in the cafeteria. Parents were notified about the incident by phone.
Today marks the first day back for traditional schools in the area.
