WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A joint training exercise between first responders and law enforcement was held on Saturday.

The training exercise was held at the New Hanover County Health and Human Services Building, and was organized by the New Hanover County Sherrif’s Office in collaboration with New Hanover County Risk Management, New Hanover County Emergency Management, New Hanover County Fire & Rescue, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington Fire Department, and Wilmington Police Department.

The sheriff’s office holds the training each year.

As Major Chris Smith explains, the training is designed to prepare first responders for the worst.

“In terms of a active assailant, we pray that it never happens in our community, but we have to prepare for the reality that it could. So, getting all of our first responder agencies together to train on this is vital in a response,” he said.

Smith added that the exercise is held at a different location each year so that first responders are prepared for a variety of circumstances.
