First sea turtle nest in NC shows up on Brunswick County beach

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Sea turtle nesting season began May 1 and it didn’t take long for the first nest to show up along the Carolina coast. The first one was found in Oak Island last week.

Alison Graves was walking the beach last Thursday morning when she came across a loggerhead sea turtle making her way back into the ocean from laying eggs.

Shortly after, the Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program was contacted and volunteers showed up at the site. Graves say the volunteers made a barrier around the nest, measured the turtle’s trail, and took one egg for DNA sampling.

Volunteers said in approximately 55-60 days the baby turtles would hatch and make their way back to sea.

Graves say the sea turtle staff told her this was the first report of a sea turtle nest in North Carolina this season.
