Fitness challenge event held Saturday to support local boy

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A group of firefighters spent Saturday raising money for a little boy who has been through so much.

Dae’yion Doe lost his mother and sister in an act of violence last September.

That incident touched the firefighters so they decided to help Dae’yion and his family by hosting a fitness challenge event at the Battleship Park.

All proceeds goes toward a scholarship fund for the 3-year-old.

“He loves firemen,” Scott Monroe, Wilmington Professional Firefighters Association Vice President. “He loves coming down to the fire house and we have just kind have been taking care of him. We like to go see him on holidays and we wanted to do a charity event, raise a good amount of money and create a scholarship for him.”

Teams of three competed in a combination of high intensity cross training exercises inspired by the physical demands of being a firefighter.

There was also food trucks and a beer tent on site.
