FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) — Florence city leaders are hoping to interview finalists for their open police chief job in mid-January, with a salary of up to $150,000 for whoever is hired.

Officials last week posted details about the position, which came open after longtime chief Allen Heidler retired Oct. 17.

“The next chief will lead the department through a period of growth and transformation as Florence continues to expand through annexations, increasing the size and complexity of is policing needs,” a recruitment brochure says. “A top priority will be strengthening recruitment and retention.”

Heidler was a mainstay in Florence, spending more than 35 years in the department and being named the 2021 Public Servant of the Year by the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce and Francis Marion University.
