Food Lion stores to transition to cage-free eggs

SALISBURY, NC (AP) — The parent company of Food Lion has announced that it will begin transitioning to a 100 percent cage-free shell egg policy.

Media outlets report that Delhaize America plans to transition its egg supply to cage-free by 2025 or sooner based on available supply, affordability and customer demand. The company will publicly report on the number of eggs involved in the transition and will aim to increase that number every year.

Delhaize America spokesman J.J. Fleeman says the move is meant to ensure humane treatment of animals and reinforce sustainability practices.

Delhaize operates Food Lion and Hannaford grocery stores.
