Former Pender High School student athlete dies in Raleigh crash

PENDER COUNTY (WWAY) — Former Pender High School student and basketball player Ky’rese Dye has died.

Dye was in the honors program at Shaw University. The 18-year-old Currie native died in a car crash Tuesday night in Raleigh. The driver of the car was seriously injured.

Shaw University issued a statement informing the campus community of Dye’s passing.

“Our hearts are heavy as we notify the campus community about the death of one of our students, Ky’rese Anthony Dye,” the university said.

Pender High School also posted a tribute to the graduate, writing;

“Our hearts break with the family and friends of an amazing contributor, leader, friend, and Pender Patriot, Kyrese Dye. Class of 2023. A class act and positive light in any situation. Rest in Heaven King.”

Dye played basketball for the Pender Patriots last year and was currently playing on Shaw’s junior varsity team.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Pender High School gym in Burgaw on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. There will not be a public viewing.
