Bill Clinton touts Harris’ vision for the future during Wilmington campaign stop

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Former President Bill Clinton spoke at a campaign stop in Wilmington on Friday, just one day after early voting opened in North Carolina.

During his remarks, Clinton focused largely on economic policy, touting Harris’ plan for an expanded child tax credit, and $25,000 for first time home buyers.

Clinton also said Harris is the only candidate that will protect women’s abortion rights

The former president condemned remarks Donald Trump made Wednesday that he would use the military against American citizens that Trump calls “the enemy from within.

“I saw a magazine cover the other day that had the names of all the enemies that might be in the way and I was on it,” Clinton said. “And I thought ‘well I hope I get sent to some place warm.’ I’m a southerner.”

Harris supporters in the audience said they’re voting to protect abortion rights and deny Trump a second term in the White House.

“I’m choosing Kamala because I believe that she stands for democracy and also women’s rights,” Calverna Koeing explained.

“I’m voting for decency, to save our democracy, to save our planet hopefully, so our kids will have a good education. All of those things,” Sandy Navarno said.

“All of those things for me as well, women’s rights, mostly to keep Donald Trump out of the White House,” Lorraine Lawlor replied.

“We just care about everybody’s rights. We want everyone to be able to live the life of their choice and feel safe and supported, and we want families to have opportunities to move up in the world, and that’s what’s really important to us,” Leigh Robertson said.

During his closing, Clinton echoing that the choice this election is clear.

“This is not a close question, and I can tell you I think if you elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, you’ll be proud of it for the rest of your lives, and your children and grandchildren will reap the benefits,” Clinton said.

The former president is also scheduled to speak in Fayetteville Friday evening.

The port city has become a popular campaign stop with national politicians this election cycle.

Former President Donald Trump held a rally in Wilmington last month. His vice presidential pick, Senator JD Vance visited Wilmington earlier this week.
