Former UNCW athlete alleges head coach shoved her, details ‘downward spiral’ in social media post
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — WWAY has new details about former UNCW women’s basketball player Paige Smith, who pleaded guilty to reduced charges last week following her arrest in February.
In a statement on her Instagram, Smith alleges that during the road game at Towson, back in January, she had an altercation with head coach Nicole Woods, who two-handed shoved her.
Smith goes on to say the incident sent her into a downward spiral, and she started smoking weed more to try and feel better.
She goes on to say her arrest happened because she was spending so much money that she made a bad decision.
Smith was arrested after being found sitting in her car in the parking lot of New Hanover High School with more than half a pound of marijuana packaged for delivery and distribution.
The felony charges were dismissed, and she pleaded guilty to several misdemeanor charges.
Smith also says she plans to publish a book within the next year,
In a statement from UNCW, they say, “We are aware of the student-athlete’s public comments and the recent development in her criminal case. The university will continue to proceed in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures. Because this matter involves personnel and student-related issues, the university will not comment further.”
A spokesperson from UNCW did confirm Smith is still a student, but did not address what possible repercussions she could face from her arrest or her allegations against Coach Woods.
