Freezin’ for a reason: Many plunged into the ocean for a good cause

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — For the first day of the new year temperatures were definitely much chilly compared to how we ended 2015, but some say this weather was great for the polar plunge in Wrightsville Beach today.

More than 150 participated lined up in their bathing suits and raced into the ocean to take a pretty cool dip.

For Christina and Tav Taylor, they said when you jump in you must get your shoulder and hair wet for you to really get the full experience.

“This is my fifth time, but this is his first,” said Christina.

Tav said, “I’m excited about doing it, just not the cold. She dragged me into this.”

Resource Development Director for Communities in School Bethany Leighton said, “All the proceeds from today go towards Communities in Schools of the Cape Fear. We help at risk youth in New Hanover and Pender counties who are at risk of dropping out of school. We help keep them in school and graduate.”

Hot coffee was available during the event for those who were cold.

Many ran just as fast out of the water as they went in.

Leighton says they hope to continue hosting this event every New Year’s.
