Full Court Press Team of the Week: New Hanover boys basketball
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–In high school sports it can sometimes take awhile for a young team to find their grove. That was the case with this weeks Full Court Press Team of the Week, the New Hanover boys basketball team.
The Wildcats started the 2018-2019 season 5-7 in their first 12 games, but since that point New Hanover has rattled off six straight wins over tough competition.
“They are all bought in now. They see that the ball is going to find them in the offense, if they don’t stress. We have really stressed defensive rebounds and they are starting to buy into that,”said New Hanover head coach Kirk Angel.
The Wildcat had a slow transition into winning ballgames. They have six underclassman on this years team that are stepping into major roles on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. At the beginning of the year things didn’t seem to be clicking until the seniors brought them up to speed.
“Us seniors had to step up and be leaders. Starting off the season we really didn’t do a good job of that. Once we got into the season and actually got a feel for each other , we started to become leaders more,”said Wildcat senior Jameric McDonald.
“It was a learning curve at first, but we got through that. It’s coming together good now,”said New Hanover senior Jalen Anderson.
New Hanover’s six game winning streak is the second-longest in the Mideastern Conference behind the Laney Buccaneers. The Wildcats have set themselves up for a chance at the playoffs, but for now they are just going to continue playing their game.
“We just got to remain humble and keep working because nothing is promised. We were picked to finish fourth in the conference, but if we keep playing how were playing were going to come out on top, hopefully,”said McDonald.
In the latest Maxpreps rankings New Hanover finds themselves sitting at No. 40. So, the Wildcats still have some work to do to secure their spot in the Class 3A State Playoffs.
The Wildcats have a rematch with the Ashley Screaming Eagles on Friday night at Brogden Hall. New Hanover won the first game between the two schools 60-58 in overtime back on January 11th.
