Fundraiser to be held for Southport teen hit by car

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — After a 13-year old boy was hit by a car during Southport’s Fourth of July celebration this year and his teachers and community are coming together to help him though his recovery.

Jevanie Green, 13, is on the road to recovery. He’s in rehab right now. And his teachers and community are putting on a fundraiser Friday to make that road a little smoother for Jevanie to help out with medical bills.

Wendy Jones, Southport Elementary School P.E. teacher, cannot say enough good things about her former student.

“He is the most kind, loving little boy,” said Jones. “Jevanie is a very outgoing 13-year old boy, full of life and spontaneity, he is energetic and very athletic, one of my fastest runners I have ever had in my 23-year career of teaching physical education.”

But this year Jevanie’s world would change dramatically. Jevanie was hit by a car on July 4.

“At first I didn’t think it was true and I was devastated,” said Jones.

The fundraiser will include raffles, an auction and food.

Barbara Ibert, a reading teacher at Southport Elementary, said some of the hot ticket items up for auction include boat cruises and dinning certificates.

“Businesses and individuals are actually calling us to donate which to us speaks to Jevanie’s character,” said Ibert.

One of those businesses that reached out to help was Check Six Brewery Company in Southport. Noah Goldman, co-owner of the new Southport brewery, said they try to help out community with fundraisers when they can.

“We gave them some gift certificates and some other things and it’s probably not enough, I’d love to do more but I am just thankful that he is going to be okay,” said Goldman.

Jevanie’s supporters are confident he is going to be okay and they are going to do everything they can to make sure that happens.

“He’s come a long way through prayers, through this community coming together and supporting him and loving him even those that don’t even know Jevanie,” said Jones.

The fundraiser is Friday August 28 from 4 to 8 on the Fort Johnson Garrison Lawn in Southport.

You can find out more information at the Jevanie’s Journey to Recovery Facebook page.

Southport police say there was a man who was charged with hitting Jevanie. Joseph Smith, 23, of Bolivia is charged with impaired driving, serious injury by vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
