Future of Holden Beach Pier uncertain as officials regroup following bond defeat
HOLDEN BEACH, NC (WWAY-TV) — The future of a new pier for the town of Holden Beach is in jeopardy Wednesday after voters had their say in the election.
More than 350 voters voted ‘no’ on a referendum that would raise more $7 million in bonds to build a new pier. The referendum also could have increased taxes over $31 a year for every $100,000 of property value. The bond would have covered demolition and construction costs only.
Mayor Alan Holden said he was not surprised to see how voters responded.
“The information that was provided that would normally have explained in detail the plans and the way the property would look conceptually, it was just, there was unfinished business it was more of a sell of a dream than actually facts.”
Holden says county commissioners will meet with town staff and determine new plans for the pier’s renovation.
