Giant slide coming to downtown Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Just as summer ends, folks in Wilmington will have a chance to take part of a playful part of the season on a very large scale.
Wilmington Downtown Inc. says a giant slip-n-slide is coming to downtown Wilmington on Sunday, September 20. Slide Fest features a 1,000-foot long slide that WDI says will turn Red Cross Street into a watersports mecca for one day.
With its natural incline, the street will be transformed with safety pads and inflatable siding surfaces into a water slide that will span from N. 3rd Street to Water Street. Slide Fest USA is the event organizer and Wilmington Downtown Incorporated (WDI) is partnering with them to host the activity.
The event will go from noon to 6 p.m. Organizers are selling a limited number of tickets to minimize wait times for sliders. Tickets, which are available online, are $10 for one slide, $25 for five slides and $35 for an unlimited, all-day pass. Discounts are available for bulk purchases, with four packs priced at $35 for one slide, $90 for a five slide pass and $126 for a four-pack of unlimited slides. Organizers say ticket prices may go up closer to the event date.
If you want to slide, you must by at least 44 inches tall, and everyone must use an inflatable tube. Tubes can either be purchased or rented at the event or participants can bring their own.
“WDI is excited to help bring this family-friendly event to Downtown,” WDI President Ed Wolverton said in a news release. “We believe that Slide Fest Wilmington will be a lot of fun for the entire community and help raise money to support our ongoing efforts to promote economic growth and activity in Downtown.”
Event parking is available on the street or at the Convention Center Parking deck or Cape Fear Community College’s Nutt Street or Hanover Parking Decks. With Red Cross Street closed for the event, these parking decks can all be accessed from the north side of Downtown.
