Global Day of Unplugging encourages people to put down the phone

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Friday marks Global Day of Unplugging, encouraging people worldwide to disconnect from their electronic devices and dedicate time to activities they love.

Established in 2003 during a time when mobile devices were still in their infancy. Since then, research shows Americans now spend an average of five to six hours a day on our phones.

US Cellular is encouraging its customers to take part in Global Day of Unplugging. Wilmington Store Manager Roy Vadillo says one of the best ways to spend that extra time is with loved ones.

“We do encourage to plan activities with loved ones. Maybe invite neighbors over, being aware of the amount of time we do spend on that, so that you can reallocate that into other activities that you might enjoy,” Vadillo stated.

For each person who shares their participation in global unplugging day, US Cellular will make a donation of up to $50,000 to Unplug Collaborative, the non-profit behind the holiday.
