GOP lawmakers to pursue photo IDs for NC voters
CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Republicans taking over control of North Carolina’s General Assembly next month want closer controls over voters.
The Charlotte Observer reported Monday that GOP lawmakers want to require voters to show a driver’s license or other photo identification when casting ballots. House leaders hope to pass a bill within their first 100 days to make North Carolina the 10th state to require a photo ID at the polls.
Supporters like Sen. David Rouzer say it’s a common-sense way to avoid voter fraud. The Johnston County Republican says most of his constituents are appalled photo IDs aren’t required to vote.
Skeptics worry it would dampen turnout, especially among the elderly and poor who tend to vote for Democrats.
