Gov. Cooper visits a New Hanover County school

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Governor Roy Cooper is continuing to promote 2024 as “the year of public schools.”

Gov. Cooper came to Wilmington on Tuesday to spend time at a New Hanover County school.

After visiting classrooms and speaking to both teachers and students at Dorothy B. Johnson Pre-K Center on McRae St., Sooper urged New Hanover County residents to act on education.

New Hanover County Schools is experiencing a $20 million shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year. $10 million of that is due to federal COVID-19 relief funds that are set to expire.

Gov. Cooper said North Carolina’s choice to invest in education is a choice to invest in the future.

“We (N.C.) rank first in business in the country. But we won’t continue to become first in business if we become last in education. Our future goes to school in a public classroom every day. We have to invest in that future,” Gov. Cooper said.

A parent of two students at Johnson Pre-K also spoke at Tuesday’s news conference. She said she is a product of early childhood education. She encouraged every parent to choose that same path for their children, to help set them up for success.
