RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Governor Josh Stein honored a distinguished group of North Carolinians on Wednesday, inducting them into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the state’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of their service and contributions to their communities.

The honorees, all from Mecklenburg County, were recognized for achievements spanning business, education, government, faith, journalism, philanthropy, and athletics.

“This group of exceptional North Carolinians have made our state stronger through their contributions across business, education, government, faith, journalism, and athletics,” Stein said in a statement. “I am proud to honor them today for their leadership and commitment to the Charlotte community.”

Among those receiving the award were former University of North Carolina System President Erskine Bowles and former Springs Industries CEO Crandall Bowles, who became the first woman to chair the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles was also recognized for her leadership and public service, along with former Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot.

Other honorees included businessman and philanthropist David Tepper, owner of the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC; former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., founder of the Steve Smith Family Foundation; and journalist Rafael Prieto Zartha, a co-founder of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and member of its Hall of Fame.

Additional recipients were Mike Clement, Malcomb Coley, Beverly Earle, Omar Jorge and Ricky Woods, each recognized for their contributions to business, public service, community development and faith-based leadership.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Recipients are nominated by their communities and selected for their lasting impact on North Carolina and its residents.

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of leaders whose work has helped shape Charlotte and strengthen communities across the state.
