‘Grateful Doe’ identified after dying in 1995 car accident

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Authorities say they have identified “Grateful Doe” – a man who was killed in a car accident in Virginia about 20 years ago and got the nickname because he had two Grateful Dead ticket stubs in his pocket.

Arkuie Williams, a spokesman for the Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office, said the man was identified as Jason Callahan of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was 19 when he was killed in 1995.

Williams said the identification was made through DNA.

Callahan’s parents have said their son left home when he was an adult, and they never assumed anything happened to him – that he was just living on his own elsewhere.

Lt. Joey Crosby of the Myrtle Beach Police Department said Callahan’s mother filed a missing person’s report about a year ago.
