Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame inducts four new athletes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame inducted four people into the Hall of Fame for their efforts and bringing recognition to the Cape Fear.

Chairman Louise McColl announced that Samuel Bowens, Lawrence Cook, Louis Howard Jr., and Nanna Rivers were chosen this year to join the Hall of Fame.

They were among 50 nominations and were chosen for their achievements and success.

McColl said these four people went above and beyond in their sports career.

“It’s how high they went,” McColl said. “It’s what they gave back once they retired from the sport. It’s the fact of what they achieved when they played sports and then come back into their communities afterwards. You find most of them are coaching, most of them are training, most of them, like Nanna, is a referee. I mean you just look at what they continue to do to help the sports.”

The inductees will be honored and made members at the annual banquet on May 6.
