Greenville Loop Trail Takes Shape in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A trail project years in the making is continuing to take shape in Wilmington, with the Greenville Loop Trail set to connect neighborhoods with schools, shopping centers, parks and other regional trails.
Construction is underway on the 4.4-mile multi-use trail, which will run from South College Road and Holly Tree Road through the Greenville Loop area before ending near Greenville Avenue and Park Avenue.
The first phase of the project is complete, including a signalized pedestrian crossing at South College Road and a pedestrian crossing at Bradley Creek Elementary School.
With the second phase nearing completion and the third phase underway, City Construction Manager Mike Naklicki says the trail will provide long-term regional connectivity and a safer way for people to travel through the community.
“What it’ll do is it’ll connect the south side of the city down at 17th Street Extension and College Road. It’ll bring pedestrians and bikers up through the Greenville Loop area across over Oleander, and it eventually will tie into what we’re also under construction with the Hinton Road and Hooker Avenue multi-use paths. What that does is connect to the backside of UNCW for the students there and continues out towards Wrightsville Beach,” said Naklicki.
Naklicki said construction on the section from Old Military Road to Park Avenue is underway and is expected to be completed by mid-2027.
The final phase, which will run along Pine Grove Drive from Greenville Loop Road to Holly Tree Road, is scheduled to begin in late 2026.
Once complete, the Greenville Loop Trail will provide connections to other parts of Wilmington’s growing network of multi-use paths, giving pedestrians and cyclists more options for traveling throughout the area.
