Groundbreaking ceremony for new solar energy project held at Tabor Correctional Institution

TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction celebrated a significant milestone towards achieving state sustainability goals with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday for a 500-kilowatt solar energy project at Tabor Correctional Institution.

The 500-kilowatt solar array is one of several major energy improvement efforts in a larger guaranteed energy savings performance contract.

The $38 million contract paves the way for increased energy efficiency in the state’s public infrastructure and includes innovative energy efficiency projects at 6 correctional facilities statewide.

The projects are expected to generate more than $60 million in energy savings over the next 20 weeks.
