Hammerheads break winless skid against FC Montreal

MONTREAL (WWAY) – Brian Ackley gave Wilmington a 1-0 lead in the first half on Thursday afternoon. Montreal came back to tie the game early in the second half, but Will Heaney came to the rescue in stoppage time. Heaney scored the game winner to give the Hammerheads a 2-1 win over FC Montreal.

Wilmington is now 2-7-5 on the season. The victory vaults Wilmington into 10th place in the East Division of the USL.

MONTREAL (USL) — Will Heaney scored a stoppage-time goal to lift Wilmington Hammerheads FC to a 2-1 victory against FC Montreal on Thursday afternoon at Stade Saputo. The win snapped Wilmington’s nine-game winless streak, as it took its second road win of the season.

Montreal had a pair of good opportunities to open the scoring in the first 15 minutes. Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé stopped a clearance from Wilmington, but their keeper Andre Rawls blocked his volley in the ninth minute with a good save.

A few minutes later, winger Fabio Morelli lobbed the ball over the keeper after getting a through ball. His shot hit the right post, and the rebound was cleared away to safety by a Hammerheads defender.

The Hammerheads opened the scoring six minutes before the halftime break when Brian Ackley put a diving header into the back of the net on a cross from the left flank.

The Bleu-blanc-noir replied early in the second half. Midfielder Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé deflected a pass from midfielder Zakaria Messoudi behind the defenders for winger Victor Omar Ndiaye. The young forward went around Rawls and scored in the 50th minute.

Montreal pushed forward well as it looked for a winner, but Rawls and the Hammerheads defense was able to withstand the pressure to keep the game level. That proved crucial in stoppage time, when Wilmington pushed forward through Marc Godelman, who passed back to Will Heaney in the penalty area. Heaney’s low shot went into the right corner to beat goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau in the 91st minute.

“It’s cruel. I think we deserved better,” said FC Montreal head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. “We can only be disappointed when we played a good game on the whole.”

“It’s really disappointing since I think we played a good game,” said defender Mélé Temguia. “It might be due to a lack of concentration or fatigue from our side.”
