Hammerheads fall to 1-5-2 on the 2015 soccer season

LOUISVILLE, KY (USL)  — Only twice all season had Louisville City FC (3-1-3, 12 points) tallied more than one goal in a match, and heading into Tuesday night’s clash with the Wilmington Hammerheads, the new club had yet to score more than one goal in a half.

Louisville City exploded for three goals in the first 42 minutes of the match and the hosts cruised by Wilmington with a 3-0 victory. Magnus Rasmussen, newly signed Aodhan Quinn and Conor Shanosky each scored a goal.

The Wilmington Hammerheads (1-5-2, 5 points) controlled possession in the attacking third in the early going but it was Louisville who would get on the board first for the fifth time this season. In the 16th minute Juan Guzman intercepted a Hammerhead pass, and found fellow midfielder Rasmussen, who drilled a shot through a defender and into the back of the net. For Rasmussen, he became the first Lou City player to net his second of the year.

In the 40th minute, Quinn rocketed a left-footed strike from 20 yards out that banged off the post and bounced in to double the hosts lead at 2-0. For Quinn, it was his first shot in a Louisville City FC jersey and it couldn’t have been for a better first impression for the 23-year-old from San Diego.

Just two minutes later, Louisville City put a third in the back of the net, this time courtesy of defender Shanosky. The center back got into the action following a corner kick taken by Niall McCabe. The ball was knocked around in the box before Quinn laid it off for Shanosky, who buried it into the back of the net to give Louisville a 3-0 lead – its largest lead of the season.

City would create many more chances in the second half, but they were unable to add a fourth. However, the three first half goals would be more than enough.

Even when Louisville City goalkeeper Scott Goodwin was tested, the Charlotte, N.C., native was not letting anything through. In stoppage time, Sunny Jane made a nice move in the box and fired a shot destined for the back of the net, but Goodwin stretched to his right to make his fourth save of the match. That would ultimately preserve his third clean sheet of the season.
