Hammerheads gear up for Pittsburgh; UNCW schedule change & Sharks get rained out
WILMINGTON, NC (HAMMERHEADS) — Wilmington Hammerheads FC will travel north on Saturday, August 1 to take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds for the first time during the USL’s regular season at Highmark Stadium.
The Riverhounds (7-8-4) currently sit low in the upper half of the USL’s Eastern Conference table, while the Hammerheads (2-11-6) remain eager to work their way up from the bottom position.
“Right now we have to fight against the mental side of the game,” said Wilmington Hammerheads FC Technical Director and Head Coach Carson Porter. “Training has been focused on competition and each individual earning their place in the team. Our character is being tested and none of us intend to give up.”
Wilmington is coming off a 3-1 loss on their home turf versus Louisville City FC last weekend. Forward Brian Ackley was able to put the Hammerheads one goal ahead of Louisville in the first half following a penalty kick, but City countered with three goals on their end for the overall victory.
Pittsburgh suffered a 4-3 loss against the Harrisburg City Islanders on the road on Sunday following an injury-time goal. Both teams currently teeter the line for a playoff berth, the Riverhounds with two more matches under their belts.
Wilmington will introduce the addition of defender Tommy Redding in Saturday’s match against the Riverhounds. It was recently announced that Redding is on loan with the Hammerheads from Major League Soccer’s Orlando City SC for the remainder of the USL season.
