Harris and Trump set to face off in first debate as NC voters weigh in

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s a night a nation has been waiting for.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump facing off in their first, and possibly only debate before the election. This is Trump’s seventh presidential debate, and Harris’ first.

Ahead of Tuesday night’s debate the NC Democratic Coordinated Campaign held a news conference at the New Hanover County Democratic Party Headquarters to preview the highly anticipated event.

NC Representative Deb Butler Councilwoman Salette Andrews, New Hanover County Commissioner Candidate Cassidy Santaguida and Senior Democrats President Linda Barnett expressed their concerns over what a second Trump presidency might mean.

“Donald Trump’s project 2025 agenda will hurt North Carolina’s working families, rolling back America’s rights and freedoms, raising taxes on the middle class, and threatening our democracy by giving Trump power like no president has ever had before,” Bulter said.

WWAY reached out to several area Republican parties, and elected officials, though none were available to speak on camera.

New Hanover County Republican Party Chair Nevin Carr sent us a statement that reads:

“We are looking forward to watching the presidential debate tonight. Voters deserve to finally hear the merits of what the democratic candidate intends on serving up instead of the constant fluff and hype we’ve seen since her nomination”

But we wanted to know how voters are feeling about both candidates.

“As a progressive myself, I think that she has the same type of policies in mind. She wants to, you know, strengthen the middle class, and I feel like that’s what’s really important right now,” one voter said.

“I don’t put much thought into politics or anything like that. I know it plays a big part in what we do, it affects me definitely now. But not exposed to much media regarding the election, so I don’t have much input there,” another voter noted.

“I think the most important things to me voting for Trump, I think he did a great job his last term. I know he’s not the most likeable guy by any means, but I think he knows what he’s doing,” one voter added.
