‘Harry’s Game’ camp happens without game due to weather

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – A spring time staple for UNCW Soccer returned Saturday. The weather cancelled the actual matchup, so UNCW remains undefeated for the annual event.

UNCW teamed up with Liberty University’s team to host a free camp for children of all abilities to play the world’s game together.

Proceeds from the exhibition go towards local initiatives such as Special Olympics, TOPS Soccer, as well as other charities that benefit children with special needs. Additional activities included bounce houses, face painting, music, and free pizza. A live auction was held  for special adidas Harry’s Game jerseys worn by UNCW players.

Harry’s Game is named after UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney‘s son, Harry, who was born with Down Syndrome. Like many families, the Heaney’s didn’t know what to expect having a child with Harry’s kind of challenges but have learned different is not synonymous with worse in the case of a child with special needs.

The springtime staple was born out of a desire to shed the stigma around a child’s limit to have fun and interact with others just because they may need a unique kind of help. It exists to showcase that any child’s personality and joy exist beyond any obstacles they may face in dealing with a disability.
