Health Dept. to VA: Water still isn’t OK at clinic

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Despite a recent report from the VA stating the water in its Wilmington facility was improving, the New Hanover County Health Department said there is still too much metal in the water.

“The New Hanover County Health Department advised that results from water samples collected at the Wilmington VA Health Care Center last week continue to show elevated levels of copper,” the department said in a news release. “The samples collected and analyzed by the NC State Laboratory of Public Health exceeded safe limits in respect to copper.”

The Do Not Use Water notice will remain posted at the facility, the release said. The statement came a week after the VA told news outlets the water tested in levels that were safe for consumption. WWAY reached out to the VA late Tuesday afternoon for a response to this latest statement.

The notice was originally posted by CFPUA in late March after high levels of metals like copper were found in the water. Since that time, numerous tests performed by a business represented by the building’s owner, Summit Smith Healthcare Facilities, have resulted in conflicting findings. The owner has never responded to calls and emails by WWAY.
