Heart failure patient shares results from Barostim implant

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center is offering the Barostim implant for heart failure patients. The first local recipient, Chuck Moon, says the results have been life-changing.

Chuck has battled cardiovascular issues since his late 40s, when he suffered a heart attack during a workout. “I survived that, fast forward about 15 years, started to notice in my cardiac function, maybe some age-related mostly just function and that’s when I got more involved with the team here at Novant,” Chuck explains.

Dr. John Rommel, heart failure cardiologist at Novant Health, explains why Chuck was a good candidate for the Barostim device:

“These are patients that are on good medications but still experience fatigue. We look to the Barostim to improve their energy and functional ability.”

After discussing options, including a transplant, Chuck and his doctors decided on the Barostim implant. The procedure took place in October, and Chuck says the results were almost immediate.

“I kind of jokingly say I’m 68 going on 55.”

Beyond improving his function, the device has given Chuck’s wife peace of mind.

“Last year, she would rarely go more than one or two hours away from me. She was always talking about, ‘Well, I have you this week, hopefully I’ll have you next week.’ The Barostim has relieved so much of that stress and anxiety for her because she sees an improvement in my function.”
