High school senior saves four lives through organ donation
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One Wilmington teenager is saving lives even after losing her own.
Lindsay Benton was in a car accident on US 74 near the entrance to Compass Pointe. She died yesterday, but she has already saved four lives through organ donation.
Her stepmother, Kelli Anne Benton said Lindsay had been an organ donor since she was just 16 years old.
“Lindsay’s dream was to be a trauma surgeon. So when we found out that she was an organ donor, obviously it was no surprise to us because that’s the type of person she was, even as a 16 year old when you first get your license. But knowing that she won’t be able to reach the dream of being a trauma surgeon or save people’s lives, it was almost like we were helping her achieve her goal,” Kelli Anne said.
Kelli Anne said Lindsay was the most determined young lady she had ever met in her life and “she would be the one to find a way, which she has.”
Kelli Anne said they will also be starting a scholarship in honor of her stepdaughter. Lindsay was a cheerleader, and the scholarship will go to cheerleaders at Wilmington Christian Academy to help fund the expensive sport.
Kelli Anne also said the support they received from New Hanover Regional Medical Center was incredible and they were there for the entire family as they went though this difficult time.
