Historical marker placed to recognize Wilmington’s ‘Furniture Row’
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A historical marker was dedicated in Wilmington on Wednesday.
The marker placed near the corner of N. Fourth and Campbell Streets recognizes “Furniture Row.”
For nearly a century, the area was known for its furniture stores.
At its peak, the street was home to nine furniture stores including G. Stein Furniture Company—which was founded in 1929.
One of the descendants of the store’s owners—Jennifer Stein along with Any Mitwol—wrote a letter to the city asking for a historical marker.
City council approved the request last year.
“The people that owned these businesses did so much for the community,” Stein said. “Not just from commerce, but they were members of city council, they were on planning boards, they represented the US House of Representatives, so it’s just so important to embrace the future, but also to be able to talk about the past.”
The building that housed the G. Stein Furniture Company was later demolished. The marker was placed in a courtyard nearby at 525 N. Fourth Street, that’s now home to the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization.
