Hoggard blanks Laney 3-0 to advance to 8A state championship

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — For the first time ever, Hoggard boys soccer will play for a state title after a home win over cross-town rival Laney 3-0 on Thursday in the Class 8A East Regional Championship game.
After a scoreless 1st half, Ari Tanner got the Vikings on the board with a strike from distance around 10 minutes after the break.
With around 20 minutes to go, a Landon Kamaris feed found the foot of a falling Sawyer Ingham to double the lead. James McLean added another with just under five minutes to go.
“As soon as we got that first goal, everyone was buzzing,” Tanner said. “The momentum was all in our favor. I was hyped, the defense was getting ready and then right after that, boom. Two, three. We just kept going. It really took the wind out of their sails, I’d say.”
“We worked so hard all summer, all season to get here” keeper Dallas Story said. “We worked so much as a team. I think it’s really just a team bond. It feels amazing. To have such a strong offense that we can rely on to score consistently every game, it means the world.”
The Vikings will face West Forsyth for the 8A championship next week in Greensboro. The date and time are to be determined.
